2012 MapOff
2012 MapOff Champion
What is Map Off? One
or more cartographers (in a group or as an individual) engage in the
production of a map based on certain criteria, data sets and/or
conceptual ideas. The maps are then presented (this year online) for
conversation and healthy constructive critique. Often there is a final
judging, typically by the Map Off client. The cartographers then get
to reveal their identities and explain the decisions behind their work. The
first NACIS Map Off occurred near the beginning of the new millennia to
generate discussion regarding map design. Over the years many different
subjects have been mapped (tourist map of Alturas, California,
migration patterns from Mexico, Hurricane Katrina damage, cheese map of
Green County, WI, etc.) and conversations pertaining to cartography and
design have been stimulated. 2012 brings us to Portland, Oregon for another annual conference and we have three (3) Map Off opportunities - each with their own focus, data, artistic style and scale so take your pick and Map Off! No one is excluded from submitting in more than one category and you do not need to be present to win. Electronic submissions in PDF format are due by midnight on Sunday, September 30th. Please send submissions and any questions to Matthew Hampton - Matthew(at)nacis.org
